Reduce, Reuse, Rebean:
Like many major cities in the west, Chicago ships most of its recycling overseas where it is rarely processed properly. This piece suggests we sort and convert Chicago’s recycling into public art in the the shape of the famous Cloud Gate sculpture.
N.Y. Sea
Too much concrete in a city can cause major problems including urban runoff and heat islands. This piece shows a New York City that has embraced the flooding caused by urban runoff to create a canal system that helps combat the heat island effect.
Couche Pour Chien:
Most cities struggle to keep clean but Paris has a unique problem. Many dog owners refuse to pick up their pets’ waste believing that it is not their responsibility but rather the Paris government’s. To keep their streets clean I have created designer diapers for dogs.
KEEP CALM and A.C. ON
With global warming, cities like London that are not accustomed to high temperatures find their city’s infrastructure failing to keep citizens cool. To keep people comfortable, I have converted the tube system along with over a dozen London landmarks into cooling devices.
Jesus Take the Wheel
By making some minor alterations to the Christ the Redeemer sculpture I have solved Rio de Janeiro’s terrible commute times.
Hydration Hydrant
To make free public drinking water more readily available, I’ve combined drinking fountains with fire hydrants. The water may be super pressurized and technically unsuitable for human consumption, but it’s free.
Splash Zone
We’ve all been there: you gotta go, but there’s nowhere to go. By turning open manhole covers into public washrooms that problem is a thing of the past.
Never Mind The Gap
Lack of accessibility is a problem worldwide. This piece depicts a plethora of terrible solutions for getting wheelchair users up stairs.
Stop, Cross and Roll
In 2019 Salt Lake City had their own terrible solution to making pedestrian crossings safer. The city implemented a program where flags would be left at intersections for pedestrians to hold so cars would be less likely to hit them. This piece pushes this idea further and depicts Salt Lakers using giant hamster balls to cross an intersection safely.
It’s Better Than Nothing
It’s Better Than Nothing is a series that depicts terrible solutions to urban issues. The goal of this series is not to solve these problems but rather draw attention to these issues that often get overlooked by elected officials.
