Bermuda’s 53 square kilometres are 7% golf course and only 5% farmland. With the biggest park on the island being only 60 acres, the nine golf courses spread country-wide dwarf it with their hundreds of acres.

Last year, 73% of tourists arrived by cruise ship, less than half arriving by air and a small minority on yachts. Despite these cruises being far more populous for tourism, they spent less than half the amount of money that by-air visitors did. Encouraged to stay on the boat, they often only purchase tourist-trap mementos and don’t engage with the local population, cuisine, or festivities beyond what their ship services provide for them.

Bermuda’s roads place themselves among the most dangerous in the world, boasting a high per-capita ratio when compared to the small population of 64,000. The phrase ‘it’s not a case of if, it’s a case of when’ is common thinking when it comes to road accidents and most people you know will have had some kind of brush with the road.

Luxury hotels and resorts prey on areas once considered local, changing the landscape and sullying areas around historical landmarks. Their presence removes much of the local presence at these beaches and makes them significantly more inaccessible.

To accommodate bigger cruise ships, the government dredged sea channels and coral reefs to create bigger pathways. As these people arrive to enjoy the natural ocean wildlife, their brief visit is unaware of how much these areas have changed in a lifetime. From coral bleaching, reef pollution, and lionfish overpopulation, the health of the ecosystem is at risk.

As almost all food has to be shipped overseas to the island- a lot of the fruit is already moldy as it hits grocery store shelves. This drives up prices astronomically high and is a contender in the increasingly aging population. Many young people are leaving, the cost of living becoming too difficult to contend with.

Bermuda is the first country to repeal same-sex marriage, having it briefly legalized twice and subsequently outlawed it both times. The windows of time allotted to people meant that many got married while they could.

Land grabs have been a historic phenomenon in Bermuda, removing lower income and POC communities to replace them with affluent international wealth and gated zones.
