Miracles are Afoot highlights miracles that have shaped my family’s history, combining magical realism elements, to honor stories of resilience and faith. They are based on real experiences lived by different members of my family, and even myself. The collection of illustrations works as a medium for heritage and memory preservation. As I grew up listening to most of these stories as chronicles of my family tree, I hope that by illustrating them their footprint will endure. The illustrations are stylistically inspired by Mexican aesthetics, such as exvotos – small charms or paintings created to seek protection and express gratitude –, and magical realism.
