Growing up as a child in the Philippines, everyone I know dreams to work or live in a different country. It’s a dream I don’t fully understand, even now that I myself immigrated abroad. In this series of artworks, I want to explore the motives, challenges and experiences of what seems to be a dream of an entire nation — to be somewhere else other than home.
I use watercolour washes on layers of translucent surfaces to portray the states of transience — of being temporary, being in-between and being incomplete. I use colored pencil and graphite linework to express the flow of time, the roadmaps and pathways, and the acts of connection and reconnection that happen as a part of the Filipino migrant experience.
