With the disruption of social and community spaces due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their subsequent migration of these spaces online many young people have had their ideas of style subcultures shaped by algorithms and consumer culture. The need to ‘fit’ or consume a specific look – creating a watered down ‘aesthetic’ out of styles has dampened or completely obscured their previously political and countercultural roots.
“Disobedient” shows that while style and affiliations with subcultures can be a way to showcase one’s individuality, it can also be a way to rebel against societal norms and injustices.
